With the effects of the 2020 pandemic on view for all to see, countries like the Dominican Republic have been stripped of their number one economic resource – tourism.

A tropical paradise with some of the most pristine beaches on Earth, it’s no wonder people from around the globe flock to this island nation. But deeper into that paradise are the people that make it a culture and not just a place.

Dominicans rely heavily on the appeal of their country. From health concerns to outright travel bans, Covid-19 has cut across many of their financial resources. With this being the case the hard truth is many do not have the ability to keep themselves and their families properly fed.

In May 2020 Alegre recognized this issue and began to isolate the neediest sections of the population on the north coast.

Through May and June Alegre, in partnership with the Cultura Viva Foundation, has hand delivered weeks worth of essential food packages to thousands of people severely affected by the results of Covid-19.

Alegre has always considered that any help is better than no help and while there is so much more work to be done, we can at least know that the work we do has helped many families get relief from that pain of hunger.
